This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, The Swans, was developed from an illustration done in 1892 by French artist George de Feure. De Feure was born in Paris of Dutch and Belgian ancestry. He felt formal academic training had nothing to offer him, never took up formal artistic studies, and created his own independent path. He was influenced by Jules Cheret's cafe concert posters and was the key designer of Siegfried Bing who influenced the development of the Art Nouveau style.

De Feure designed furniture, created theater designs for the Le Chat Noir cabaret and various posters. De Feure's contribution to decorative arts led to his nomination for Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (the French National Order of the Legion of Honour established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802). The Order is the highest decoration bestowed in France. In spite of his great talent and achievements, de Feure died in poverty at the age of 75 in Paris.
