This beautiful, stylized advanced cross stitch chart was created from an illustration by J.C. Leyendecker called The S.S. Leviathan which was completed in 1918 and was one of The House of Kuppenheimer advertisements in 1918. During The Golden Age of American Illustration, J.C. Leyendecker was considered the most "in vogue" American illustrator of his day, he illustrated more than four hundred magazine covers (322 for the Saturday Evening Post) and became a mentor to an entire generation of young illustrators. When Norman Rockwell began his career, he specifically emulated him. Leyendecker, through the creation of the "Arrow Collar Man" became the symbol of fashionable manhood and defined the ideal American male. He was masterful at the subtle looks between his models, which is clearly evident in this illustration.
