The Lady of Shalott Cross Stitch Pattern
John William Waterhouse

This fine-art cross stitch chart, The Lady of Shalott, was developed from the famous painting done in 1888 by artist John William Waterhouse. It is an iconic painting and perhaps one of his most famous. The painting is based on the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson written in 1832 and resonates the isolation and despair of a beautiful and tragic woman. The warm color palate is reflective of the poem and the fact that The Lady of Shalott is about to die. Waterhouse truly captures the sorrow in this painting through his portrayal of the woman’s bewildered look and unkempt hair, the dark woods and sky, two candles on the boat are out, the tapestry she wove in her tower hangs from the side of the boat, the absence of other people, she seems about to let go of the chain which moors the boat, her mouth is slightly open “singing her last song” and she is staring at the crucifix next to the candles. It is such a beautiful representation of the core message of this poem.

Awesome pattern of a painting I've been in love with for years. I cannot wait to set up a space for this.

A link to the dmc/ anchor threads needed would have been handy, and possibly recommended aida cloth colours? :)
