This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, The Art of Painting, was developed from a painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer, acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. The Art of Painting is also known as The Allegory of Painting and Painter in his Studio. It is one of Vermeer's most famous paintings and is the largest and most complex of all his works. It remained in his possession until his death, even when the family was in financial straits.

The Art of Painting shows an artist's workplace and is exemplary in its illumination of the interior through the use of light. This painting has only two figures - the painter and his subject. It is thought that the painter is a self-portrait of the artist, though the face is not visible. The other figure in the painting is the artist's subject, and is a girl dressed as the Muse of History, Clio. She is wearing a laurel wreath, holds a trumpet and carries a book by the Greek historian, Thucydides. We also see a heavy curtain like a theatre curtain, pulled to one side, giving a feeling of seeing the actors on stage.

After the Nazi invasion of Austria, the painting was acquired by Adolf Hitler for his personal collection. At the end of World War II, the painting was rescued from a salt mine in 1945 and presented by the Americans to the Austrian Government in 1946. It is now the property of the State of Austria.
