This adorable advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Miss Lily&'s First Flirtation, was developed from a painting done by English artist James Hayllar. He received his training at Cary's Art Academy in London and went on to study at the Royal Academy. In 1851 he travelled to Italy with artist Frederic Leighton, where he stayed and worked until 1853. Hallyar was first known as a portrait artist but later turned to genre art where he painted scenes or events from everyday life including studies of children. Hallyer had five daughters and four sons, and four of his daughters became notable artists in their own right, exhibiting paintings at the Royal Academy.
