Madonna of the Lilies Cross Stitch Pattern - Alfons Mucha

This fine-art downloadable cross stitch design was developed from the 1905 painting, Madonna of the Lilies, by Czech artist Alfons Mucha. Mucha was commissioned in 1902 to decorate a church in Jerusalem dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In this painting, Mucha depicted the heavenly vision of Madonna surrounded by a mass of lilies as a symbol of purity. The young girl in a Slavic folk costume symbolizes “remembrance” as she carries a wreath of ivy leaves. Her strong physical presence is a contrast to the ethereal Virgin. This painting was the final version of the mural for the church. This project, however, was cancelled for unknown reasons. All that remains of the commission is this painting, and the earlier versions of it, as well as a design for a stained-glass window, all of which are in the Mucha Trust collection.
