This fine-art cross stitch design, Luncheon on the Grass, was developed from a painting done in 1862-1863 by French artist Edouard Manet who is defined forever as one of the world's greatest artists. It is a painting of a nude female and a scantily dressed female bather having a picnic with two fully dressed men. It was a very controversial painting at the time because it illustrated the rampant prostitution in Paris, and was rejected by The Salon in 1863. Manet, however, exhibited it in the 1863 Salon des Refusés where it sparked public notoriety and earned Manet much media attention. It resides at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
