Luncheon of the Boating Party Cross Stitch Pattern
Pierre-Auguste Renoir

This advanced fine-art cross stitch design, Luncheon of the Boating Party, was developed from an 1881 painting by the famed impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. It is the best known and most popular work of art at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC. It is Renoir’s instantly recognizable scene of a friendly, lively, and enjoyable group of diners at a summertime meal alfresco. It captures an idyllic atmosphere as Renoir's friends share food, wine, and conversation on a balcony overlooking the Seine at the Maison Fournaise restaurant in Chatou.

The woman holding the dog in the foreground is Aline Charigot who later became Renoir's wife. Charles Ephrussi, editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, wears a top hat in the background. Artist Gustave Caillebotte wears a white boater's shirt and flat-topped straw boater's hat, seated backwards in his chair next to actress Angèle Legault and journalist Adrien Maggiolo. Actress Ellen Andrée drinks from a glass in the center of the painting, and Renoir's close friends, Eugène Pierre Lestringez and Paul Lhote, are depicted flirting with actress Jeanne Samary in the upper right-hand corner of the painting. Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party isbrimming with color and reflects both the time period and Impressionist style. It is a historic representation of French society in the mid to late 19th century.
