It features a common Japanese motif, the arched bridge, which was also used by Monet and Whistler in their paintings. Even before his visit to Japan, his paintings contained characteristics of Japanese art, in particular, his interest in surface decorations. Figures with Lanterns and a Bridge resides at the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow.
