Fashion illustration has been around for nearly 500 years. At one time it was the only way to advertise and promote fashion. However, the illustrations not only showed a representation of a garment, they were considered a form of art. They were often commissioned to be used in fashion magazines. Vogue was, and still is, the celebrated leading magazine, using fashion illustrations until the late 1930s when they were replaced with photographic images.

Some of the leading fashion illustrators were JC Leyendecker, George Wolfe Plank, Eduardo Benito, Gerda Wegener, etc., many of whom belonged to the exclusive group of illustrators known as the “Beaux Brummels of the Brush.”
