This fine-art downloadable cross stitch design was developed from the well-known painting, Tower of Babel, done by Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1563. The Tower of Babel was depicted in the form of a ziggurat made up of terraces connected by ramps and stairs, and roughly resembling the shape of a pyramid. Bruegel placed the Tower near a river in a coastal type landscape. The painting includes many meticulous details with busy laborers unloading and moving stone slabs from ramp to ramp, etc. The Tower appears sturdy and well-constructed at first sight, but as one looks closer, the design contains flaws . . . probably intending to deliver the message of how presumptuous and bold the whole project was. This painting is housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
