This beautiful downloadable fine-art design was developed from the 1913 painting, Berlin Series No. 1, by American artist Marsden Hartley, America's first great modern painter of the 20th century. Hartley achieved this distinction in Berlin and Paris between 1912 and late 1915. Berlin Series No. 1 is one of his earlier works in the group of paintings done in 1913 and 1914 which Hartley called his Amerika series (German spelling for America) referring specifically to Native American art. There are colorful patchworks of banners, checkerboards, military regalia and insignia on black backgrounds in this series. Hartley got his inspiration for the Amerika paintings from collections of North American Indian artifacts, and gave Cubism a new feeling and emotionality by bulking up the images into something more tactile and muscular. This painting resides in the collection of Carolyn (deceased) and Roger Horchow of Dallas, Texas.
